3.VERBO ESSERE (VERB TO BE)

The verb to be is used:

-together with a noun or adjective to provide information or express a physical-mental state: la Sicilia è un'isola = Sicily is an island

-with the meaning of esistere (to exist), trovarsi (to be), stare (to stay): gli studenti sono in classe = the students are in the classroom

-as an auxiliary, in the compound tenses and the passive voice: Paolo è partito = Paolo has left; la mela è mangiata da Paolo = the apple is eaten by Paolo
